VIC: Man rescued from beneath pier
Police and firefighters saved the life of a man who was found barely clinging to a grille
underneath a pier on Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay early this meaning.
A fisherman alerted police around 2.45am that a man was trapped in the water under the
Kerferd Road Pier at inner-suburban Albert Park.
Two police officers dived into the freezing water to help support the man, who was just
holding onto the grille, while firefighters used a rope to secure him.
The man was eventually pulled out, with the help of a lifebuoy, after nearly half an hour.
Police believe the man had been in the water for some time.
The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, is being treated for hypothermia in the Alfred
Hospital. It's not yet known how he came to be in the water.
