Fed: Record 100 million smuggled cigarettes seized in 2001
CANBERRA, Jan 10 AAP - More than 100 million smuggled cigarettes were seized by Customslast year, federal Justice and Customs Minister Chris Ellison said today.
The record number was four times more than the number of smuggled cigarettes netted in 2000.
The smokes were detected in more than 30 separate cargo consignments from overseas.
Senator Ellison said the discovery was the result of ongoing Customs investigationsinto attempts to smuggle cigarettes into Australia without paying duty.
