NT: Perth pedophile gets 2yr suspended sentence for spa attack
A suicidal pedophile from Perth who molested a young girl in a hotel spa while holidaying
in Darwin .. has been sentenced to two years in prison.
But the sentence has been suspended immediately.
HARRY MCCLUMPHA sparked a missing persons search in the Northern Territory following
the incident involving the 11-year-old girl in January this year.
His lawyer told Darwin Magistrate's court today the 70-year-old fled because he was
ashamed by his actions and wanted to die.
He was found by police after six-days .. disoriented and lying under bushes near the
centre of the city.
The court heard MCCLUMPHA travelled to the Top End with a Perth family he'd know for
more than two-years.
Magistrate SUE OLIVER said he was treated by the young girl and her parents like a grandfather.
His lawyer LOUISE BENNETT said he suffered from paedophilia and had twice tried to
kill himself because he felt ashamed of the disorder that had destroyed his life .. including
two failed marriages.
She said he was a frail old man who had shown remorse and served more than three months
hard time in prison .. requiring protection even from the other protected inmates.
The magistrate sentenced MCCLUMPHA .. who's been in custody since his arrest on January
11 .. to two years in prison .. partially suspended.
She said he was free to walk from the court and return to WA provided he undergoes
a sex offenders course and reports regularly to police.
